Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not a movie buff. There are many that I haven’t seen, that I probably should have seen before (my boyfriend will be the first to tell you that). But, one movie that I have seen recently, I HAVE to write about.
Devil’s Advocate starring Keanu Reaves and Al Pacino is definitely a must see whether you are into religion or not. It is about a lawyer and his wife from a small town in Florida who move to the city of New York and get wrapped up until their demise.
This movie, to me, was full of signs that I believe should be taken heed to. One of them is “Beware of people bearing gifts.” I say that ALL the time. Gifts can be tangible and non-tangible. The destruction of Keanu Reaves was based on gifts. Someone wants to move you all the way from small-town Florida to big-time New York with ALL expenses paid. Now, watching from the outside, the first thing you say is “he should’ve known then.” But it’s a lot easier to make that decision from the outside. If someone were to offer you a lucrative job and put you up in a beautiful condo for free, I’m sure ALL of us would accept. However, how many of us would put our guard up? Not many. Another thing, and the main purpose of the movie…vanity. Al Pacino, as the devil, said that “vanity is my favorite sin.” Why? Vanity is the EASIEST way to get someone. Fill up their head and pump their ego and you have a puppet in your hand. The easiest way to avoid that is to seriously not take compliments. That’s something that I, personally, have been working on. Before I used to seek compliments because I felt that they validated me as a person, but I realized (especially after watching that movie) that compliments are to disarm you, sweeten you up and soften the edge that you need to have to survive. It makes you drop your guard because you start to feel yourself. DANGEROUS!
I could go on and on about the signs in this movie, but I figured I’ll stop here, because i think those are the 2 biggies. Getting what you want is not supposed to be easy. If someone offers you a lot, that means they want a lot from you. No one ever gives out what they don’t expect in return. AND, keep your vanity in check. We’re human, we all have it, but don’t let anyone else tap into it because they could very well be using it to get to you. Don’t let them.
It was a good movie, check it out.
